Using RSS | |
| RSS (Really Simple Syndication) technology has emerged to simplify how we are informed of changing events in this world. You may manually search though the CNN or similar website, or you may use RSS to have selected site(s) automatically notify you.
FUMC Deming has joined the thousands of other global organizations that use RSS – we will notify you when something is added to the website. Your excuse not to stay informed has become weaker! To use RSS, your computer must have an RSS Reader. To use RSS, you must subscribe to an RSS feed (FUMC Deming, MSNBC, CNN, etc.). Outlook 2007 and IE7 and 8 users will find this extremely easy to accomplish.
|
OUTLOOK 2007
Launch Outlook 2007. The left-hand sidebar will contain several folders (Inbox, Outbox, etc.) including a folder labeled RSS Feeds. Clicking the RSS Feed folder will display an instruction page. You may click on any source in the lists on that page to subscribe to a feed. |

FUMC Deming is not on that list so a little extra work is required.
Return to RSS Feeds folder. You should notice a new subfolder labeled "FUMC: What's New". Open this folder to see the messages. Read these messages just as you do when in the Inbox folder; old messages may be deleted, etc.
One final to-do: This will make the FUMC Deming feed also readable in Internet Explorer 7.
|
INTERNET EXPLORER 7 or 8
This procedure is only required if Outlook 2007 is NOT available. You're done! Note: You may repeat this procedure, select the FUMC: eNews entry to subscribe to the church's on-line newsletter. To view this feed in the future, locate and click the Favorites icon (a yellow star at the left margin near the top of the screen); if not visible, press Ctrl-Shift-J. Hover over the "FUMC: What's New" folder name and click on the circulating arrows to force a refresh. Then click on the folder name to read the contents.

|
One Final Note: Websites providing RSS feeds will add content to your RSS Reader but may not, by design, delete content. Therefore, the number of items shown by the Reader will seemingly grow without limit. Most RSS Readers provide some mechanism to delete items above a specified limit; that limit by default is quite large, possibly 200 or 250 items. This limit may be reduced -- in Internet Explorer 7, you may right-click while hovering over the RSS Feed name and select Properties; change the Number of Items to something smaller, such as 20. Click OK. Outlook 2007 users may delete RSS items in the same manner used to delete eMail items. |
